Our Guest Speaker was Arlene E. Sorkin. She was introduced to us by Rotarian Eric Campione.

Ms. Sorkin is a Staten Island resident, has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Temple University and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Bryn Mawr School of Social Work and Social Research. She has worked as a psychotherapist and as a program director with various community organizations. Her expertise and experience include eating disorders, perinatal and newborn health, domestic violence, LGBT topics, and dementia to name a few.

While living in Michigan she co-founded IlluminArt Productions, a non-profit organization, in 2002 with a friend who was an actor and director. It was a way to combine her social work expertise with her love for theater. She brought IlluminArt to Staten Island in 2010. The first program was at IS 7 in 2010 and currently there are programs in multiple locations including PS 57, PS 65, Petrides, Wagner High School, and the West Brighton Neighborhood Senior Center. Performances of plays about bullying, violence, grief and loss, and consequences of underage drinking have been presented at over 30 schools and community organizations just during the 2015-16 school year. visit: www.illuminart.org for more information.

Ms. Sorkin is very involved in the community including the Executive Women’s Council of the SIEDC; Staten Island Borough President’s Health and Wellness Committee, Tackling Youth Substance Abuse Steering Committee; Chair of the Community Service Awards Committee for Soroptomists International Staten Island Chapter; and Staten Island Committee on Child and Adolescent Mental Health. She was elected to the Board of the Staten Island Not-for-Profit Association in 2015 for a 3 year term.

AND, YES is the answer to the question she always seems to get, she is David Sorkin's wife.  She and IlluminArt received glowing reviews from Eric, Fern and Dr. Rehman.

Attached is a Board Member Recruitment Profile prepared by IlluminArt for prospective Board members. If you are interested or know someone who may be a good fit contact them at 347-951-9650

Staten Island Rotary

For the Rotary Club of Staten Island it is a very special time of year. Beside being time for the changing of the guard with the honorableRosemarie Scampas taking over as President from the affable FrankScarangello, it is the time when we do what we do best, namely give out large amounts of money to organizations the deserve it and will help our community better because of it.

The Guest Speaker at the Staten Island Rotary was Amy Zavatto (Marotta). Amy was promoting her new book - Forager’s Cocktails.Amy has a warm and engaging personality. And she knows how to mix drinks! - All that sounds like a perfect woman. If you know Dan Marotta and ever wondered why he is so happy (unlike most attorneys) it’s not all the money he has buried in his mattress - it is definitely his wife Amy. Amy briefly read from her new book, detailed for us how to safely forage for ingredients and then proceeded to make us all a cocktail. Some gin, some fresh juice, some club soda, a touch of sweet syrup? a splash of club soda and a sprig of garnish. The cocktail was DELICIOUS! Amy named it The Smart Rotarian….
